Winners of the 2009 Ontario Conservation Areas Photo Contest

Conservation Ontario is pleased to announce the winners of the Ontario Conservation Areas Photo Contest. We asked you to show off your favourite conservation areas and you certainly did. With over 600 contestants and more than 1000 eligible photos, judging was a daunting task.

There were so many excellent photos, representing the diversity of what Ontario’s Conservation Areas offer, the 7 judges laboured for hours over their selections.

Many thanks to everyone who entered the contest and who helped show off the best of Ontario’s Conservation Areas.

Now you can watch a short video showcasing some of the 2009 photo contest entries, as well as the honourable mentions and prize winners, or scroll below to see the winning photos, photographer names and locations!

First Place

Photographer:
Travis Favretto
Conservation Area: Marks Bay, Sault Ste Marie Region Conservation Authority
Judges Comments: Beautiful composition… the sun being off-centre draws your eye across the whole photograph, great colours and quality of light with the mist, a very strong landscape photograph. I think this shot shows how beautiful and natural conservation areas can be, and I love the colours. This place looks so still and perfect. I would love to go there!

Second Place

Photographer: Chris Mayne
Conservation Area: La Vase Portage Conservation Area, North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority
Judges Comments: Colours are spectacular and I like the sense of discovery/adventure/mystery from the canoeist perspective. Quintessentially a conservation area - canoe, fall, water. I could relate to it very easily and it represented conservation areas to me. Clear, beautiful composition.

Third Place

Photographer: Derek Dafoe
Conservation Area: H.R. Frink Outdoor Education Centre, Quinte Conservation Authority
Judges Comments:
Nice composition, and technically a sound photograph, but I picked it mostly for the subject matter… it’s telling a story.
